Who killed the Living Deadbeats?
With a new EP releasing mid October at SBC and a track in an upcoming compilation, it seems like there is no end in sight. However, this is also their final show.
The Living Deadbeats have been together for six years. They have several tours including a six-week cross-country tour under their belt, one full-length record and a series of smaller recordings and compilations with an EP titled Brain Candy on the way. Their sound and live show defies categories, playing garage shows and punk shows alike to a loyal fan base. With all this, one might wonder why they’ve decided to throw in the towel. Why did Vancouver’s female fronted garage punk favourites, the Living Deadbeats, call it a day?
“It's all good. We're all okay with everything and even good things run their course and come to an end, ” says lead singer Lindsay Kasting about their decision not to carry on. “We’re just growing apart, our interests are evolving to be more and more different and we’ve decided to just accept that we want different things from music and punk and are calling it while we still like each other.”
As far as all the work that they put into the Living Deadbeats, Pete Fiend, bassist and original member, chimes in, “I think we got a pretty good legacy. I mean it doesn’t get left in the ether. We’ve got another recording coming out, and our last show it will be a tape release. It’s five songs recorded, as always, by Adam Payne.“
“It’s not like we’re not dropping out of punk.” Lindsay adds when asked about what projects she is going to work on now, “I'm working on starting up a new DIY art and music collective called the Black Lab and I’m more interested in other aspects of song writing right now and working on improving my drumming and guitar.”
Pete and the guitarist from the Living Deadbeats, Geeza Mercredi, are playing together with the Love Buzz, an all-male riot grrl tribute, covering everything from Bikini Kill to the Go-Go’s. Drummer Nadja continues to play in Wett Stilettos and Shit Talkers. The band, The Living Deadbeats, will officially stop living after Oct 18th and will be missed. Hole in My Head and Motorama be sharing the stage with their friends for the send off.
The Living Deadbeats’ perform at SBC October 18.
