Better late than never
As seasons change and the warmth disappears there is a still murmur that calls out for the dog days of summer to continue on forever, and sometimes the right music can generate this feeling. This year we can turn to Rad Disaster’s new album vs. Man to help make this the summer that never ends. With their energetic and melodic brand of skate punk, Rad Disaster is a power trio made up of Pat Truman on bass, Tyler Tardi on drums and Lee Perina on guitar, with vocal duties shared amongst the group. As with many bands they formed from the ashes of old discarded projects, making friends during the journey of these bands, and once underway a band name was needed. “My sister called us Plaid Disaster one day when we were all wearing plaid, but our friend Nick had to one up her and called us Rad Disaster,” Perina says.
“We’ve been a band for four years now, but with actual lyrics only two. All our first shows were instrumental,” Tardi reveals. “We played a crappy bar at UFV, and some guy threw his fries at me,” Truman laughs. “So I called the audience ingrates, and we decided it was time to add some lyrics to our music.” The band’s new and first album was recorded at Bully’s Studios in New Westminster by Michael Kraushaar. “Mike is a really creative guy. One of the things he did was put a microphone in the bathroom while we recorded and we took some tracks from there,” said Truman. “For the intro to ‘Dive’ Mike rigged his mic at the bottom of the stairs and put my amp at the top, recording it from quite a distance, so it would be more atmospheric. That was pretty neat,” Perina divulged.
Upon explaining the album title Perina tells a funny story about his girlfriend who is a teacher. “In a story there is one of five different conflicts that are all man vs. something, and there was one kid that didn’t understand the prescribed conflicts and on a test listed one as Man vs. Truck. We considered that as the title, but then went with vs. Man so the album could be Rad Disaster vs. Man.”
Rad Disaster plays The Railway Club Oct. 6th for the release of vs. Man.
