LIFE AGAINST DEATH - RICKSHAW THEATRE DECEMBER 2014

HELLO FOLKS, well, actually, the volatile front woman here is probably the sweetest person you will ever meet! A moment with Twitch from Life Against Death giving it all. So it goes!

As we finish off 2014, we are busy updating behind the scenes to bring you new albums and formats! We are adding in some extra release reviews as well, focusing on some locals that might get overlooked as everyone flocks to the top ten list.

The 2014 live reviews and photosets are going through a rebuild to accommodate for functionality changes and elements that are no longer supported within our parent host, the old and new. Yes, that is technology for you. Since, advertising dollars does not drive us, things are built in a DIY manner on a volunteer basis. Do bear with us as we swap content around and find a better solution. Some of 2014, 13, 12 live reports are back online as to not leave an empty space. 2014 hopes to finish off with year-end round up as soon as the pieces come together.

DISWORSHIP

Brains, speed and volume

“We like our doomy sludge yet are compelled to grind, grind, grind,” says vocalist, Mark Skwarok, on the topic of influences such as Eyehategod, Phobia, Insect Warfare and Noothgrush.

Disworship evolved from the ashes of Cathar with Freya Giles on drums and vocals, (Nun Un, Cathar), Greg Dinardo on guitar (Strain, Write Off), Scott Bartlett on guitar (Nun Un, Destroy All) and Kavan Cronin on bass (Memorial, Night Terrors, Brains). “We went through some member changes and our music began to change,” says Skwarok. With that, came a new name.

WHO GOT TOONED?

Look no further this January, here we have the anomaly of Paul MacKenzie!

This front man has been chasing the road for a few generations. Be it a salute to Detroit Rock n Roll, revving up the engine for the Enigmas, or hitting the highways with The Real MacKenzies! This gent is back in the ring this January with the elusive Enigmas.  With their high energy, psychedelic garage rock, geared up in tight stripes ready to coax your shoes and the winter blues outta those cement blocks.  But that’s not all; the Real MacKenzies’ got some surprises up their kilts! Woops!

Illustrator Dan Harbord takes his skills to the page to get you tooned up for a series of stellar performances. Ready, set, GO!

WITCH OF THE WASTE

An Island In the Flood

There are many challenges facing a young band trying to break through Vancouver’s surging heavy music scene — a scene that is awash with many specific sub genres and pigeon hole traps. It is important for a band to stand out by having a distinct sound and unique identity, otherwise, how can a band fit into and yet separate themselves from this overflowing landscape?
That is not an easy thing to do without alienating the often fickle metal crowd that trudges out every weekend to witness what can be a one-dimensional four-band bill.

ANI KYD

Branches Out

Artist, vocalist Ani Kyd’s newly wrought energy turns its attention to her new album Entangle. Out on Alternate Tentacles, a label known for heavier or more provocative material, this release broadens with a new set of roots and branches. On Entangle, Kyd collaborated with four different composers across six songs, giving each song a distinct sound and feel.

SPREE KILLERS

Spree Killers - Selftitled - Independent

If the Spree Killers were required to submit urine samples to test for performance enhancing drugs, not only would it come up positive, but traces of vinegar would also be found. In particular, vocalist Fanni Adams’ screeching diesel style defines the piss and vinegar attitude. An explosive and snotty over the top delivery like hers will either send people heading for the hills or cause seizures of reckless destruction. She rants and raves like a vile hawk at feeding time. Underneath it all is a thick pulse-driving punk rock drubbing of the senses provided by tasty guitar slides and three-chord raucousness. With song subjects that include such themes as necrophilia, inappropriate beer-spillage and not giving a rat’s ass.

SUBCULTURE JANUARY

SUBCULTURE by wendythirteen

As we enter another calendar year of giveths and taketh aways, I face one of my greatest challenges... Working in a bar sober... As you may have heard, I was recently hospitalized for a pickled liver and its manifestation of an absurdly huge buildup of fluid in my body... After some fluid shedding meds, I feel like I was a balloon that was popped finally... Sadly, this development in my overall health has caused my permanent breakup with Jagermeister... It was a long exclusive run... I'll miss you!

ENIGMAS

Live and Revealed

This anomaly returns for one special night! But who are they? Well, by the ‘80s, this missing link had grown out of Vancouver’s punk scene. They may have worn the “psychedelic garage rock” moniker, but there seems to be so much more about them. With a raucous live show reputation, they’d launch onto stage in their second-hand store ‘60s garb, props, humour and a night of high-energy rock ‘n’ roll.

So, fast-forward to 2013 and three of the four original members have been busy rehearsing. Spotted in the jam space, Paul McKenzie (Real McKenzies) is on vocals and sax, Randy Bowman (Scramblers, Subhumans) on drums, Mike Davies (Cane Toads, JP5) on guitar and Stephen Hamm (Slow, Tank Hog) joins them on bass once again, since the 2010 astounding Enigmas birthday show for Spores vocalist Danny Nowak.

So, why the show now, just out of the blue? “Because Mike said so,” answers Bowman. Mackenzie appears to nod in agreement. Davies, silent on the matter just walks in with a liquid light show projector and an incredible 12-string, “Ventures” Mosrite in hand. It was a hushed moment, where you just have to respect that actions do speak louder than words.

These mystery pranksters came together in the early ‘80s with Davies, McKenzie and Olinek. Cam Wagner was originally on drums but he couldn’t make all the live shows. So, enter Bowman, as he had just finished with the disbanded Subhumans. McKenzie, a cook at the time had prepared Bowman a memorable meal in a restaurant visit and the two had bonded. The original bassist Brian Olinek unfortunately no longer plays with the band, as he has relocated.

But the origin of the band name? After a good 45 minutes of long winding tales, the true confession finally leaked. “Spoik came up with it [Spoik being the guitarist Davies’ handle],” says McKenzie. “We just figured it was a good idea at the time.”

And the band sound? With the punk scene settling down, they found themselves listening to the Pebbles garage compilations, also MC5 and Iggy. The Detroit influence had a hold on the front man, he claimed it spawned a ‘70s Detroit pilgrimage for him. “We play a lot of Sonics songs,” says Bowman, and “five of our set are Sonics songs.” Texas psych classics such Roky Erickson and Red Crayolas were discussed. “We love, The Coasters, “5” Royales, and American jazz,” Bowman and McKenzie spurted and the name James Brown spilled out as well. With wildly diverse influences the band seemed to retain an elevated drive. “As for the bass melodies, Olinek wanted to play as fast as he could,” says the drummer, explaining the bass playing took on a guitar role. Self-production and artwork was a big part of Davies contribution “If Mike Davies wants it, it happens,” says Bowman.

They had recorded some material with help from Zulu Records. Two twelve-inch records emerged, Strangley Wild in 1985 and Enigmas? from 1983. They can also be found on a few comps and 45s. A clever holiday, Christmas song "Roadblocks Are All Over This Town" is on Ukhisimuzi, a 1984 Zulu seven-inch, and a Halloween song can be found on the 1984 Hollow Weiners comp. Then suddenly McKenzie makes a connection and breaks out singing the hilarious creepy “Dead Zoo” while seated at the table. “Danny’s favourite song,” adds McKenzie.

After some prodding about a studio visit, the boys broke down and revealed. “We have a plan to rerecord some of the material that never made it out,” says Bowman and adds, one of the songs being “Charlie,” about Charlie Manson and another number about riding a bike. No studio yet, but you are going have to go to the live show to catch these! So hop a bike, unfold your “Windshield Wiper” dance step directions and get set!

On Saturday, January 11, 2014 join the Enigmas for yet another celebration at the WISE Hall and Lounge
