It is quite a coup to have The Waldorf bring Faust all the way from Germany to East Vancouver! Recently after their 40th anniversary, the reunited splinter group with two original members, Jean-Hervé Péron and Werner ‘Zappi’ Dermaier are met with open arms on this night. A large crowd was gathered as the sound of locals Von Bingen emanated from the room. The treated guitar and sax duo played a lovely swirling drone piece to start the proceedings.
MIDDAY VEIL |
The crowd did not see what was coming when the antics of Faust were
displayed next! They are joined by Olivier Manchion and Amaury Cambuzat on
guitar and keyboards respectively – members since 1996 and previously in the
outfit Ulan Bator. David Golightly from Midday Veil also joined in on
keyboards. Jean-Hervé Péron is like a mad scientist on bass conducting the rest
of the group to where the songs will go. A kind of free form improvisation is
apparent with French dialogue and a pounding rhythm flows from track to track.
He then disappears and fires up the electric grinder, chainsaw and cement
mixer, which were ‘kind of a shock’ back then, you could say! But, there would
be no industrial music in the modern age without this crew who range from wild
Can like jams to delicate beauty with trumpet and voice. Their music has a
spiritual quality despite the violence which is why they’re loved the world
over and their influence goes though several genres. It is a treat to even have
them return to a cultural landscape that seems to lose freedom year after year.
